Nature of handmade & vintage products // Nature des produits faits main et vintage

Each piece is carefully crafted into wearable art in limited quantities in our Montreal studio. Sourcing rare fabrics, designing, hand dyeing, meticulously treating against fraying, stiffening, hand sewing, and assembling are all part of the process. The sheen and softness of the lace is preserved wherever possible. Due to the nature of our production method, each item may vary slightly. Most of the pieces are limited editions as they are created from vintage lace as well as other vintage or exotically sourced materials. There may be slight discolouration or scuffs due to this vintage nature. This is part of the jewelry’s uniqueness and story.

Materials and components // Matériaux et composantes

Vintage lace is the main source of inspiration. As lace had been a dormant trend for many years when Tamara was first drawn to it, most of what was available was made anywhere between the 1950s and the 1980s. The art deco and vintage style shapes as well as the sheen and feel of the high quality rayon guipure lace were what held value for jewelry design. From there, Tamara started collecting special, rare and inspiring lace as well as a few other vintage textile materials . Much of what was originally collected had been manufactured in America, and more specifically in the textile factories of New Jersey, USA. This vintage lace was mostly made of Rayon threading which is an artificial silk made of tree cellulose. Today as the majority of American manufacturers have shut down due to overseas cheap labor, it also becomes more difficult to source high quality rayon lace. Polyester and Nylon are now the dominating fibers in the industry and is mainly produced in Asia. Although we do use some fo these new materials when the shapes were too compelling to ignore, we definitely focus on the more local and rare lace of yesteryear.

Most earring hooks are made from silver, gold or bronze plated brass, and certain ear posts are made of (surgical) stainless steel or silver. They are all nickel-free and hypoallergenic. However, we offer more hook options for specific needs including clip-ons, gold fill and sterling silver. Please contact us for pricing.

Our chains are made from steel or plated brass and are nickel-free and hypoallergenic as well.

Care // Entretien

Although every piece is made with love and as solid and durable as possible, lace and the occasional fringe remain delicate materials. It is preferable to store the jewelry flat or hanging depending on the design to help keep its shape. Should some of the lace become wrinkled, some options are available including placing under a heavy flat item (ie. book), using a flat iron for hair (specifically for the lack of moisture) on low setting to iron fringe and lace tips as well as Tide-to-go or Shout wipes to brighten whites.

If you have any questions about caring for your This Ilk jewelry please contact us, as different items may require different solutions.

It is highly recommended to wear the included backings behind the ears to avoid losing an earring. If you unfortunately do lose one, please contact us as we might be able to replace it depending on design.
