A little history // Un peu d'histoire

After a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design in 2007, Montreal designer Tamara Bavdek needed a change. A big one. So after nearly 20 years of long hair, she decided to chop it off into an unconventional retro bowl cut. Knowing that a touch of femininity would be lost together with her long locks, she turned to the era of awesome short dos with women who knew how to pull them off: the 1960s... She was struck by Edie Sedgwick's, Andy Warhol's muse, amazing style. Extra large statement jewelry and bold make-up seemed to do the trick so off she went looking for a way to mimic a pair of Edie's earrings which although were not made of lace, reminded her of fabric. And that is how it all started...

A stroke of genius, and soon she realized that lace is to textiles what gold is to metals and diamonds to rocks, and that nothing beats lightweight statement jewelry! 

Today, the hair has grown again but the passion for statement pieces never fades. Founded in Montreal in late 2008, This Ilk is now distributed in over 30 boutiques in Canada, in the USA and around the world.

Après avoir complété un baccalauréat en design industriel en 2007, la designer montréalaise Tamara Bavdek avait besoin d'un changement. Un grand.

Ainsi, après près de 20 ans de cheveux longs, elle décide de couper le tout pour obtenir une coupe rétro non conventionnelle. Sachant bien qu'une touche de féminité serait perdue avec ce nouveau style, elle se tourne vers une époque où les femmes maîtrisaient l'art de la coiffure à la garçonne, les années 1960... Elle a été frappée par le look étonnant d'Edie Sedgwick, muse d'Andy Warhol. Elle portait de très gros bijoux qui semblaient être faits de dentelle, et un audacieux maquillage. Cette dernière fut une grande source d'inspiration pour la créatrice, et c'est ainsi que tout a commencé...

Un coup de génie, et après un peu d'expérimentation la designer réalise que la dentelle est aux textiles ce que l'or est aux métaux et les diamants aux roches, et que rien ne vaut d'énormes bijoux ultra légers!

Aujourd'hui, bien que les cheveux aient repoussé, la passion pour les pièces uniques et originales est toujours bien présente. Fondée à Montréal à la fin 2008, la marque This Ilk est maintenant distribuée dans plus de 30 boutiques au Canada, aux États-Unis et dans le monde entier.
